6 Books to Read Before They Hit the Big Screen

I’m currently “reading” The Housemaid, and yes, the quotes are doing some heavy lifting. I don’t exactly have time to sit down with a book these days, but I’ve figured out a little trick: one AirPod in while I fold laundry or tidy up after bedtime. I can still hear Romy on the monitor, get things done, and sneak in a few chapters. It feels like me-time while I’m doing things that aren’t for me. Win-win.

I’m almost done with the book (it’s that good), so I started looking up what to listen to next. Then I found out The Housemaid is being made into a movie, which, naturally, sent me down a rabbit hole of other books that are headed for the big screen soon.

So if you’re looking for your next me-time listen or read, here are six stories Hollywood is releasing soon.

1. Regretting You by Colleen Hoover

A story about a mother and daughter navigating love, loss, and forgiveness after tragedy strikes. It explores family, resilience, and how grief changes the way we see each other.

🎬 Movie release: October 24, 2025

2. The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

A fast-paced psychological thriller about a woman who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for a wealthy family — only to realize things inside the house aren’t what they seem.

🎬 In production: 2025

3. People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

Two best friends take annual summer trips together — until something goes wrong. Years later, they reconnect to see if their friendship (and chemistry) can survive one more getaway.

🎬 Film adaptation: In development by Temple Hill Entertainment

4. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Between life and death, there’s a library where every book represents a version of your life lived differently. When Nora finds herself there, she explores all the “what ifs” that could have been — and what still can be.

🎬 Film adaptation: In development with StudioCanal and Blueprint Pictures

5. Grief Is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter

A poetic and emotional story about a father and his two young sons mourning the loss of their wife and mother — and the mysterious crow who arrives to help them through it.

🎬 Film adaptation title: The Thing With Feathers

6. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

From the author of The Martian, this story follows a lone astronaut who wakes up on a spacecraft with no memory — and slowly realizes he’s humanity’s last hope for survival.

🎬 Starring: Ryan Gosling

🎬 In theaters: March 20, 2026

Me-Time Takeaway

Reading before watching gives you space to imagine, connect, and savor the story your own way — no scrolling, no spoilers, just you and the words.

So grab one (or all six), claim your corner of the couch, and dive in. You’ll thank yourself when the opening credits roll.
